What is Acne?

Acne is a common, inflammatory skin condition where pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne outbreaks typically occur on the face, but can affect the neck, chest, and back as well.

Causes, Signs & Symptoms

There are many causes and triggers of acne, both on the skin surface and systemically. Oil, skin cells and bacteria buildup in the pores cause acne breakouts, and hormonal changes in puberty, pregnancy and menopause are other common causes of acne. Acne breakouts may also be caused by regular intake of foods that you may be sensitive to or intolerant of. Bacterial and yeast imbalances in the digestive tract often lead to skin disruptions.

Acne can appear in many forms, including whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, nodules and cysts. Acne commonly develops as small red bumps that resemble a skin rash, but can become cystic when the bumps fill with pus. Inflamed acne lesions can be very tender and painful.

Acne is not common in childhood, but may present in teens and young adults. While it typically resolves, adults may also struggle with acne.

How is Acne Treated?

The cause of acne will determine the treatment. Common acne papules may respond to topical, spot treatments of retinoids, salicylic acid, or other topical skincare combinations. Cystic acne treatment may involve oral antibiotics to help with resolution. If food sensitivities or digestive issues are a likely cause of acne, your doctor will order appropriate testing to understand the root cause of acne.

Severe acne may result in scarring, dark spots, and pigmentation. Microneedling is one of the best treatments for acne scars, as it stimulates collagen production to smooth scarred skin.
